Feeding your birds a variety of foods doesn't have to be expensive or difficult. I have a number of different menu's that I choose from for my birds each day.
Along with Higgins seed mixture, every day my birds get one of the following:
Menu 1: Soaked and/or sprouted seed ~ Purchase a good sprouting seed mix, or make one of your own.
Rinse seeds, and soak for a minimum of 8 hours(soaked) or 12-16 hours (sprouting).
Menu 2: Fresh fruits and/or vegetables ~ a combination or single. Do not feed avacadoes or raw onions.
Limit peppers.
Menu 3: Soaked beans/peas/legumes. Any combination of those things that come in the package and need to be soaked before cooking. Soak overnight, and cook according to package. Another easy way to prepare is to soak overnight in crockpot, rinse, and cook on low all day.
Menu 4: Tri colored pasta. Make sure there are no artificial colors in them, but most tri-colored pasta is colored with real vegetable. Cook according to package and add any of the following...or all :)
One jar organic baby food fruit or vegetable
Unsweetened applesauce
Cook package of mixed frozen vegetables in same pan as pasta
Hard boil one or two eggs in same pan as pasta
Soaked/sprouted seed
Any fresh fruit or vegetable.
Organic spaghetti sauce (just a touch for taste...they love this!)
Fresh salsa
Menu 5: Wild rice. Cook according to package and add any of the above.
Menu 6: Packaged cooked bird food for example Beak Appetit
Snacks: Millet, toast w/peanut butter, commercial bird treats. (These are given on occasion)
Be creative and continue to offer foods, even if one is totally ignored. You never know when you might
wear them down, and they might find a new favorite food.
Try something new...
